Architectural Historian – Indiana

We are seeking a motivated and highly-skilled individual to join our Indiana team as a full-time Architectural Historian, reporting to the Indiana Regional Manager and working in our Indianapolis office. This person will evaluate the eligibility of historic buildings for listing in the National Register of Historic Places for Section 106 compliance and Section 4(f) documentation. THE PERSON

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Art History, or a closely related field. Candidates must also have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in cultural resource management with an emphasis on Section 106 regulations and compliance, determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, and Section 4(f) documentation. Excellent written and oral communication skills are critical, as is attention to detail. The ability to work as a team member in a fast paced, collaborative environment is important.

Our desired, well-rounded candidate will serve as a subject matter expert on Architectural History for the Indianapolis team. Other job duties will include performing literature review and record checks, researching archival/historical documents, and conducting field work based on contracted projects. This position will complete Historic Property Reports, Determination of Effect Evaluations, Section 4(f) documents, and filing of Historic Architectural Building Survey (HABS) documents at the Federal and State level. Hybrid remote work is available after 90 days, but the position will require weekly attendance at the Indianapolis office. Field work may include overnight travel within Indiana and neighboring states. Candidates must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications (36 CFR 61) for Architectural History.
