| CUY-90-15.24 Bridge Asbestos Inspection | |||||||
ASC Group completed an asbestos inspection of the bridge deck of the CUY-90-15.24 Bridge as part of the Central Viaduct Rehabilitation project. The bridge carries eight lanes of traffic over the Cuyahoga River, surface streets, and industrial and commercial parcels. The inspection included a review of available plan sheets, a visual inspection of the bridge, and collection of samples of suspected asbestos-containing material. The inspection of the underside of the bridge was completed under an Ohio Department of Transportation permit that authorized right-lane closure for the inspection. Beginning at the west end of the bridge, the inspection progressed along the bridge, lowering the snooper bucket at selected intervals. The inspection of the underside of the bridge identified an electrical conduit running on both sides of the bridge and was determined to be potentially ACM. Bulk asbestos sample analysis was performed in accordance with the U.S. EPA’s recommended test method: Interim Method 600/M4-82-020, “Determination of Asbestos in the Bulk Insulation Samples” using Polarized Light Microscopy and Dispersion Staining (PLM/DS). A sample of the electrical conduit was taken from each side of the bridge. Both samples of the electrical conduit contain asbestos. The conduit is classified as Category II Nonfriable Material. During rehabilitation any conduit that will be impacted must be properly removed prior to the commencement of rehabilitation activities. The inspection of the decks of ramps and approaches did not identify suspected ACM and no samples were collected. |

ASC Group, Inc., completed asbestos inspection services for the former City Center Mall located in downtown Columbus, Ohio. City Center Mall contained two large multi story “anchor” tenants as well as approximately 130 specialty tenants as well as public space and parking. The inspection of the mall was completed in accordance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPS). Samples of potential asbestos-containing building materials (ACM) were collected from the mall. During the survey, a total of 1,287 samples were collected of suspect ACM and organized in tabular form in the report. Due to the inability to determine renovation dates for the individual commercial units, each space was sampled as a separate entity resulting in the large number of samples collected. |
